Pre-Hab

This is the term given to having physiotherapy before your planned surgery. It is extremely useful for to be seen prior to surgery so that we can:

  1. Assess your movement and strength and if appropriate look at your gait (walking)
  2. Set your goals for your post-surgery rehab
  3. Prescribe exercises to improve your strength and mobility so that you are at your best prior to surgery- this will have a positive impact on your recovery
  4. Discuss the surgery- we can share our tips and tricks to aid your recovery and make suggestions of how to make life easier whilst you are recovering.
  5. Answer any questions and hopefully allay any worries or concerns.

Post operative rehabilitation

Jill will endeavour to help and support you to achieve your goals. Physiotherapy will focus upon:

  1. Restoring range of movement and mobility
  2. Strengthening weak muscles
  3. Advise on pain relief
  4. Restore normal movement patterns
  5. Aim to get you back to work and the activities you do for fun whether that be walking your dog, playing with your children or grandchildren, playing sport, running a marathon, gardening, driving, cycling, swimming, cooking – your goals will be specific to you and so will your rehab.

Case Study for Post Operation

A 62-year-old office manager who had a left knee replacement

Assessment

Seen preoperatively for one session a month before surgery- discussed the operation, how to manage pain, given a simple exercise programme to strengthen all muscle groups and practiced walking and climbing stairs using crutches. Advised to do some batch cooking and purchase a non-slip mat for the shower.

Referred by her orthopaedic consultant 2 weeks following a knee replacement.

  • Physiotherapy was recommended to improve range of movement at the knees and strengthen all associated muscles and to help correct her walking pattern after a prolonged period of limping.
  • Patient struggling to sleep and unable to work or drive.
  • Goal: to get back to walking the dog without crutches and return to all normal activities including driving, work, and Pilates.

Treatment

Consisted of a progressive bespoke exercise programme (exercises all sent by email) to strengthen her muscles, soft tissue works over the operation scars to improve scar mobility, gentle stretching to restore range of movement.
Exercises to improve balance, gait pattern and practising getting up off the floor (one of her fears). Advice given on management of pain and swelling.

Outcome

Attended for 6 sessions in total, back to full function including work and driving with minimal pain, sleeping well and able to complete a one hour walk with no ill-effects. Joining a Pilates class in February!
